Molossidae is a typical tropical family of bats with about 85 species around the world, but only one occurring in Europe. They are generally named as free-tailed bats, as the last vertebras of the tail are not enclosed or surrounded by the uropatagium. Their general aspect is very distinct from all other European bat species, mostly due to their large, winkled lips around their mouths. All molossid bat species have long and narrow wings that allow them to have a fast and powerful flight, although not highly manoeuvrable. They are skilled aerial hawkers, although only in open spaces or in high altitudes.
